Skull gems were one of the seven types of * gems found in Diablo II. Skull gems do not return in Diablo III, though the other six types of gems, Rubies, Sapphires, Topazes, Diamonds, Emeralds, and Sapphires, do.
There are many more quality levels of gems, and all gems have different stats in Diablo III than they did in Diablo II, though.
